Paying the Stupid Tax while drilling the pilot pin holes in the harp neck, I broke this.
This is a drill bit.
I *know* it’s a drill bit!
Ah, but what kind?
It’s a 13/64ths brad point drill bit.
The chuck on the drill press was not properly tightened and the torque snapped the drill bit in half. I was lucky I did not destroy the many hours of work that had already gone into making the neck.
But like the panel from my favorite graphic novel, Girl Genius, it seems as if every tool used in this trade is some outlandish oddment that you can’t just nip off to Lowe’s to get a replacement. This drill bit allows for precise centering in the template marks and drills a hole that requires the least possible reaming to fit the taper of the tuning pin.
But it’s a rare bird. The best source I found was Grizzly Tools, which swore you had to have minimum $80 order from them. But when I did one of those price searches, it basically said they were kidding, and so I got a dozen to make sure I don’t have to stop work again because I have lost or destroyed my 3/17 left leaning occipital Heterodyne wrench.
